Novena Honoring The Most Holy Trinity

As we celebrate the Most Holy Trinity, we acknowledge that the mystery is never fully understood, but can be experienced, felt, and known.
The prayer written by Joyce Rupp, O.S.M., in “Out of the Ordinary“, may open us to a grateful and heartfelt experience of our God who is Eternal Love.
A novena (from Latin: novem, “mine”) is an ancient tradition of devotional praying over a period of nine successive days.
Using the prayer, “The Heart of Eternal Love“, the following novena may be prayed in honor of The Blessed Trinity.
One stanza of the poem prayed three times a day accompanied by the action suggested in the reflection constitutes the novena completion.
May the Heart of the Eternal Love of God burn more brightly through the practice of this devotion.

NOVENA:PRAYER AND ACTION

THE HEART OF ETERNAL LOVE

Joyce Rupp

Day 1

Heart of Love, Source of all kindness, Teacher of the ways of goodness, you are hidden in the pockets of daily life, waiting to be discovered.
How was God hidden in your day in an act of kindness given or received?

Day 2

Heart of Gladness, Joy that sings in our souls, the Dancer and the Dance, you are Music radiating in our cherished caches of consolation.
Move your body in a dance as you pray.

Day 3

Heart of Compassion the Healing One weeping for a world burden and bent, you are the heart we bring to the wounded, worn, and weary.
Pray for someone who is hurting.

Day 4

Heart of Comfort, Sheltering Wings of Love, Refuge for sad and lonely ones, you embrace all who bear loss, gathering their tears with care.
Contact someone who grieves in love and support.

Day 5

Heart of all Hearts, the First and Best of all Companions, you are the Gift secreted in our depths, connecting us with others.
Make a list of people who have been or are companions on your journey of faith. Give thanks to God for them.

Day 6

Heart of Understanding, One who gazes upon the imperfect, the incomplete, the flawed, the weak, you never stop extending mercy.
Ask God to reveal areas in your life that are in need of forgiveness and healing. They are opportunities to do God’s work.

Day 7

Heart of Freedom, the Uncontained Spirit bearing truth, Great Liberator, forever calling to us, you urge us toward unrestrained trust.
Who are the people that you need to forgive?  Ask the Lord to bless them every time they come to mind.  It is ok to be angry and hurt. Tell God. Leave the rest in God’s hands.

Day 8

Heart of Generosity, Abundance of insight and hope, daily you offer us gifts of growth, leading to continual transformation.
What time, talents or treasures are you being asked to share as a faithful steward of God’s bountiful gifts?

Day 9

Heart of Deepest Peace, Center of Tranquility, Resting Place at the core of our being, you are waiting always for our return to this sacred home.
Reflect and list the graces of the novena as you look back on the nine days of prayer.  Thank God.  What one action will you take as a sign of your thankfulness?

CONCLUDING PRAYER FOR EACH DAY:

  1. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee;
Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!
  2. Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee, Casting down their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and seraphim falling down before Thee, Who was, and is, and evermore shall be.
  3. Holy, holy, holy! Though the darkness hide Thee, Though the eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see; Only Thou art holy; there is none beside Thee, Perfect in pow’r, in love, and purity.
  4. Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy works shall praise Thy Name, in earth, and sky, and sea; Holy, holy, holy; merciful and mighty! God in three Persons, blessed Trinity!
