THANKSGIVING GRACE

Father, we give you thanks this day as we remember that all gifts come from you. You created us in your own image and set us over all creation as your stewards. Once you chose a people and gave them a promise that all would be blessed and all could be free. We remember the faith of our ancestors who came to this land as a place of promise and hope. Our prayer of Thanks reminds us to be grateful for your bountiful gifts. You lead us to the blessed vision of peace. Bless all of us present and those we love who cannot be with us today. Bless this meal, a symbol of your daily care for us. As we share this gift may we grow in love and service through Christ our Lord.

Please join us for the Thanksgiving Mass at 9:00 AM. The word Eucharist means, “to give thanks.” What a perfect way to say thank you to our provident God from whom all blessings flow.

75TH JUBILEE YEAR
ST. PHILIP THE APOSTLE
1943 – 2018
WE REMEMBER, WE CELEBRATE, WE BELIEVE

The word Jubilee meaning a special anniversary of an event has deep Biblical roots. In the Hebrew Scripture a ram’s horn yuhel or yuvel was sounded like a trumpet heralding a special year of restoration, equitable distribution of lands and release for captives and slaves (Leviticus 25). Jubilee is a Latin translation of the Hebrew word for ram’s horn which is shofar in English.  The prophet Isaiah (61) proclaims a beautiful vision for a year of favor from the Lord.

In Luke’s Gospel 4 we learn that in Nazareth, Jesus was handed the scroll of Isaiah to read in the synagogue. He chose the Jubilee passage from Isaiah as follows: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me because he has anointed me to bring good news to the poor. He has sent me to announce freedom to captives, recovery of sight to the blind, to give liberty to those who are burdened and to proclaim the year of favor from the Lord. Today this Scripture passage is filled in your hearing.”

Throughout the ages the Roman Catholic Church has a joyous history of celebrating various Jubilee Years, most recently the Year of Mercy 2015 – 2016.

JUBILEE YEAR 2018
The Year of our Lord 2018 is our parish Jubilee commemorating 75 years of fulfilling our mission of Opus Christi – Christ’s Work. During the decades our parish has been love in action, bringing good news through spiritual, service and social ministry.

YOU ARE INVITED
On the first weekend of Advent, December 2nd and 3rd, we will open our 75th Jubilee Year with special celebrations at each Mass followed by refreshments in the Auditorium. Please plan to join us and enjoy this time to share the joy of our love in action years.

PRAYERFUL ACTIVITY
During this month of November, remember your family members, friends and fellow parishioners who were part of Saint Philip the Apostle Parish and now live with the Lord.
1. Recall your loved ones gratefully and say thank you to them and to God for them.
2. Ask their prayerful intercession as we continue our mission to do Christ’s work during our Jubilee year.

2017 BISHOP’S ANNUAL APPEAL: IN GIVING, WE RECEIVE
This time of year, as our nation plans to celebrate Thanksgiving, let us reflect on how we use all of the gifts given to us by a loving God.  Consider showing your thanks for all your blessings by making a gift to the 2017 Bishop’s Annual Appeal.  As we are reminded in this year’s Appeal theme – In Giving, We Receive – your participation not only impacts the lives of tens of thousands of people in need, but it benefits you as well.  Please make a pledge today!  For your convenience, you can make an online gift or pledge at www.2017appeal.org.

FEEDING THE HUNGRY AT THANKSGIVING
Our parish has a long history of giving service through ministry especially in the area of feeding those in need at Thanksgiving. We will not be collecting food but rather taking free-will donations that will be converted into food gift certificate cards.

HOW THE THANKSGIVING FOOD DONATION WORKS
Please return your Thanksgiving Food Donation envelope in the collection basket this weekend, November 18/19. You may write your parish giving envelope number on the Thanksgiving Food Donation Envelope in order to have your gift added to your yearly contribution statement.
Your contribution will be converted into food certificate gift cards. An added benefit is that for every $100 donated, five dollars is given to us in return by the food store for our charitable works and therefore a gift of $100 becomes an actual gift of $105.
