Order of Mass Part 1
Prior to the entrance procession, one server lights all candles located in the Sanctuary. Replace the wax stick if the wick is too short or if it is missing.
Prior to the procession, two servers remove the candle from either side of the Altar. The server with the left candle goes down the left aisle, and the server with the right candle goes down the right aisle.
Always genuflect when you enter the church or cross in front of the Blessed Sacrament as a sign of reverence and respect.
The entrance procession begins in the back and goes down the center aisle. Usual participants: cross-bearer, servers, lector, Eucharistic minister, concelebrants, deacon, Priest. When incense is used, the thurifer leads the procession.
The cross bearer is first (unless incense is used). Carry the cross straight and with the image of Christ facing forward. Move to the far left at the Altar. Do not genuflect as the Priest and other ministers do.
Next are the two candle holders. At the Altar, the server holding the left candle moves to the left facing and aligning him/herself with the candle stand. The server on the right moves to the right facing and aligning him/herself with the candle stand.
The Priest and everyone else genuflect to the Altar. DO NOT GENUFLECT IF YOU ARE CARRYING ANY LITURGICAL OBJECT IN YOUR HANDS (i.e., candles, cross, book, holy water).
Once the Priest proceeds up the Sanctuary, the cross bearer (server #1) places the cross in the stand and moves to a seat. Remain standing.
The left candle holder (server #2) places the candle in the stand and moves to a seat. The right candle holder (server #3) places the candle in the stand and immediately moves to the Presider’s Chair and stands ready to hold the book for the Priest.
The fourth server goes straight to a chair. Remain standing.
Everyone remains standing until the congregation sits.
The order of the Mass is ordinary. You sit and stand as if you were part of the congregation.
GREETING, PENITENTIAL RITE, GLORIA, OPENING PRAYER
The book holder assists the Priest during this part of Mass. When the Priest closes the book, the server proceeds to a chair to the left of the Priest and sits down.
