Many people ask me, “Donna, what do you do at St. Philip’s?” Well, my title is Evangelization Minister. “What exactly is an Evangelization Minister?” Good question because I wouldn’t call “evangelization” a user-friendly word. Evangelize means to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ. What does it mean to spread the Good News? How do you do that? If you ask Pope Francis, he will say you need to meet people where they are and invite them.

But who am I, Donna Scancarella, that I should be called to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ? I’m a wife, mother, daughter. I spent most of my life caring for a family. I don’t have any special credentials that would make me an evangelist.

In today’s Gospel we hear how Jesus calls Simon, James and John to follow Him and evangelize. They were fishermen. They didn’t have any special evangelization credentials. Yet, Jesus calls and invites them, “Come after me,” to evangelize, “and I will make you fishers of people.” Jesus meets the Apostles where they are in a boat washing their fishing nets. Where was I? I was working in a school for special needs children when the Lord called me.

Like the Apostles, as I discovered that Jesus really is the Good News and as my love for the Lord grew, I knew I wanted to share that Love. As it turns out, I do have some credentials; God has given me some gifts and talents. My enthusiastic personality, love of public speaking and the simple fact that I enjoy being around people helps me to share the Good News with others. The skills that I developed raising a family and working also help me in my ministry as Evangelization Minister to provide opportunities at St. Philip’s that invite people into a deeper relationship with Jesus.

So, what do I do?

  • Work with families preparing for funerals and are present with them at liturgies
  • Coordinator of the RCIA
  • Moderator of the Prime Timers social group
  • Director of the Women’s Cornerstone Retreat Ministry
  • Sponsor Guided Meditation Nights
  • Little bit of everything as a team member of the staff What can you do? The Lord is inviting you to participate in some way.
  • Spiritual – Join us for Guided Meditation on February 14th.
  • Social – Come to our St. Patrick & St. Joseph Dinner Dance on March 2nd.
  • Service – Check out St. Philip’s many service ministries: Knights of Columbus, Rosary Society, Columbiettes and their Blanket Ministry, just to name a few.

Jesus calls all of us, you and me, ordinary people just like Simon, James and John to evangelize, to spread the Good News. We don’t have to understand why the Lord called us, only that we are called. Then, as Pope Francis tells us, we need to meet people where they are and invite.

Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, “Whom shall I send? Who will go for us?” “Here I am,” I said; “send me!” Isaiah 6:8

Reflection Questions:

  • How is the Lord calling you to be a witness to God’s love at home, at work, in church?
  • What have you done to use your gifts and talents to share the Good News with family, with friends, with church members?
  • Which form of spiritual, social or service opportunities listed above will you participate in?
  • Who can you invite to participate with you?
