The Year of Consecrated Life

In November of 2013, Pope Francis signaled that he would dedicate the year of 2015 to Consecrated Life in the Church. He was meeting with a group of Major Superiors in Rome and, while his encounter with them was scheduled to be a rather short one, he spent over three hours talking with them. The Holy Father reminded them: “A radical approach is required of all Christians, but religious persons are called upon to follow the Lord in a special way: They are men and women who can awaken the world.”

St. John Paul writes in the opening sentence of Vita Consecrata: “The consecrated life, deeply rooted in the example and teaching of Christ the Lord, is a gift of God the Father to his church through the Holy Spirit.” (VC#1)

Pope Francis has reminded us: “Consecrated life is a prophecy. God asks us to fly the nest and to be sent to the frontiers of the world, avoiding the temptation to ‘domesticate’ them. This is the most concrete way of imitating the Lord.” Father James M. Sullivan, O.P

The Dominican Sisters of Caldwell served our school from 1954 to 1979. The Franciscan Sisters of Peace served from 1979 to 2000.

We are now grateful and blessed for the two Religious Sisters that serve our Parish and School. Sister Christine Liegey, Sisters of the Presentation of BVM has given 35 years of ministry to our parish. Sr. Pauline Piechocki, SSC, continues to serve in our school (since 1982) as Kaleidoscope Math teacher.

An additional blessing for our parish is Casa Guadalupe, a community of women discerning Consecrated or Religious life, who live, work and pray only doors away from our church.

Please keep all of these devout and dedicated women in your prayer during this Year of Consecrated Life and pray for vocations.

Open Houses are being held at four motherhouses in the diocese of Paterson on Sunday February 8th to celebrate this Year of Consecrated Life. You are invited to join the Sisters at any of the following: Religious Teachers Filippini, Morristown, 2-4 PM; Sisters of Charity of St. Elizabeth, Convent Station, 1-4 PM; Sisters of Christian Charity, Mendham, 2-4 PM; Franciscan Sisters of St. Elizabeth, Parsippany, 2-4 PM and Presentation Sisters at St. Andrew’s, Clifton , 1-3 PM.

Sister Rene Donohue, FSP served as our dynamic School principal from 1979 to 2001. Sister’s commitment to social gatherings, music, theater and the arts is a rich part of our heritage. We honor her memory with the creation of The Sister Rene Donohue Cultural Arts Legacy which will be funded by the proceeds of our Spring Royale. This year her legacy is continued by providing new lighting and a refurbished sound system for our auditorium. Remember Sister Rene, and contribute to her legacy, by taking an Ad in our Journal in loving memory of Sister or in support of God’s gifts of fellowship and the Arts.
