The Blessings of Silence and Solitude

The apostles gathered together with Jesus and reported all they had done and taught. He said to them, “Come away by yourselves to a deserted place and rest a while.”
– Mark 6:30-34

Blessed are You, Lord our God,
Who give to us nourishment
in times of silence and solitude.

From uplifted hearts, hearts full of gratitude,
may this prayer of thanksgiving rise to You,
God of All Gifts and Great Generosity.

We are thankful for times of stillness
which allow us to listen
to that holy river of prayer
flowing in the heart;
for in presence
of Your Holy Spirit within,
the Spirit who prays continuously.

These times if quiet heal us, within and without,
replenish our spirit with new strength
and prepare us to meet the constant struggle of daily life
with renewed hope and joy.

Like Your Son, Jesus,
who climbed mountains at night,
who retreated deep into the desert
to find You in stillness,
may we,
after this silent-solitary communion with
allow our lives to reveal
Your glory and grace.

Lord, may the seeds of the tree of stillness
bear fruit for us
and for all the restless world.

Blessed are You, Lord of God,
who gives to us nourishment
in times of silence and solitude.

Welcome to our new Youth Minister

Andrew Scalone has been working with our Youth Ministry Program on a volunteer basis for the past year. We are delighted to announce that Andy will join our pastoral staff as our part-time Youth Minister. Andy will plan and coordinate the Youth Group meetings with the youth team and our Young Adult Youth Leader, Bridget Rice.

In addition, he will be responsible for our retreat programs, Seven, Antioch, Search and be an ongoing source for the high school Religious Education Program.

Andy is organized, creative and dedicated to our youth.

My name is Andrew Scalone. I am the youth minister here at St. Philip the Apostle. I have been an active volunteer in youth ministry for the Diocese of Paterson for over 15 years, and am excited to continue my ministry here at St. Philip. I am a graduate of Seton Hall University and Montclair State University, where I earned a BA in Advertising Art and a MA in Education, respectively. I am currently a Health and Physical Education teacher at Chatham High School.

As the community welcomes me, I will make certain that all of our youth are welcomed, as well. Through a program of diverse spiritual experiences, social opportunities and service to the community, we will do everything we can to develop true discipleship in our youth. Thank you for all the support that you continue to show our young people as companions on their journey.

The Summer Youth Group Meetings will be held in the Youth Room on Thursdays at 7:00 PM on the following dates:

  • July 23
  • August 6
  • August 20
