by Donna Scancarella,
Evangelization Minister

These past few weeks have been a time of transitions at St. Philip’s as we said farewell to a beloved priest and welcomed another. I must admit change is hard but it’s not without its joy.

As I prepared for Fr. Julio’s farewell celebration I heard so many wonderful stories from parishioners about him. I heard how he brought communion when they were sick, anointed family members, gave spiritual direction and a host of other pastoral ministries that meant so much to them. As a parishioner I can say the same thing. One very meaningful time for me was when Fr. Julio visited my parents on the Feast of St. Blaise to bless my father’s throat after his stroke. As a parishioner I will miss him very much. As a team member of St. Philip’s, I was so blessed to have a fun and easygoing relationship with Fr. Julio. Change is hard.

But with the challenge of this change also comes the joy of welcoming our new priest, Fr. Joseph. I’m truly excited to hear his homilies and to share in the exuberance that comes with being a newly ordained priest. There’s something so special and holy in watching a newly ordained priest during the consecration. I feel like this transition is a new adventure that we can share together. I am truly looking forward to sharing in ministry with Fr. Joseph, to develop our own new and fun working routines, to learn new ways of looking at things and hopefully teach him a few things about St. Philip’s, as well. And if as parishioners we feel the joys and challenges that come with these transitions, I can’t even imagine how Fr. Julio and Fr. Joseph feel.

Following is a prayer by Joyce Rupp that reminds us to be open to the joy that can come with transitions, especially happy transitions like the welcoming of a newly ordained priest. As St. Paul says in today’s second reading, “For when I am weak, then I am strong” when we put all our faith and trust in God.

Delight of my Heart,
your joy echoes in my life.
I relish this happy transition
now shaping my days.

With the welcoming path before me,
I receive the promise of a new vista,
the benediction of an open road,
the pledge of an unfolding adventure.

Breath of Freshness,
my spirit expands and revives.
I taste the air of happiness
and breathe in welcomed newness.

You stir up hope-filled dreams,
restore my belief in all that is good.
You draw me toward contentment
and open the door to deeper trust.

How blessed is this passage of time
when confidence pervades my spirit
and peace permeates my mind.
I move forward with assurance.

Liberating Spirit,
soaring with freedom in my soul,
I fly with the gift of newfound hope,
my inner wings stretching wide.

Faithful Companion,
carry me in your abiding love.
Thank you for leading me closer
to that which encourages my growth.

Source of Joy,
you give me the gift of gladness.
Thank you for this blessed transition
and the chance to enter life more fully.

Our Jubilee Prayer
Rejoicing in you, O Lord, with thankful hearts we pray as . . .
We Remember
gratefully our past companions on the Journey
whose sacrifice inspires us.
We Celebrate
the good news of love in action that empowers spiritual,
service and social ministry.
We Believe
In God’s providence as faithful stewards who continue
Christ’s work using the Keys to the Kingdom.

The Year of our Lord 2018 is our parish Jubilee commemorating 75 years of fulfilling our mission of Opus Christi –which is Latin for Christ’s Work. During the decades our parish has been love in action, bringing good news through spiritual, service and social ministry. Jesus said to our parish patron St. Philip, “Whoever believes in me will do the works I do and even great works.” John 14:22
